Launceston
The ancient town of Launceston was once the capital of Cornwall. Though its importance may have waned, the town has retained much of its mystery from the past and now has a history and heritage that is just waiting to be discovered and explored. Launceston Castle dominates that landscape here, standing proud and strong just as it did when it was originally built following the Norman Conquest. Though the fortification is no longer required to protect the town from rampaging marauders from the neighbouring county of Devon, it still has quite a presence in the town.
Things to See and Do
Launceston is a town which is ready to welcome visitors all year round. There are many attractions which all of the family can enjoy, for example Lawrence House, located close to the castle grounds, is a very child friendly museum which is widely regarded as one of the best anywhere in the country, and to make it better it offers free admission. St Mary Magdalene Church has a tragic tale just waiting to be discovered, and then there is the wonderful Launceston Steam Railway which is always a hit with children and adults alike. The steam engines have been painstakingly and lovingly restored to their former glory and now offer a glimpse into life in a bygone time.
Travel a little outside of town and you will find a wonderful landscape of moorland and rugged coastline with plenty of walking and cycling trails just waiting for you. If golf is your sport, you will find that here are two courses to choose from should you fancy some time on the greens. Alternatively horse riding and paintballing are also popular pastimes. While away a few hours casting your line into the River Tamar or take a walk along one of the many town and country trails.
Places to Visit
Head out of town a little and you will be in Newport. This is where the River Kensey cuts its way through the rolling countryside. You will be able to see the steam engines puffing their way along the line across to Newmills. This is a wonderfully relaxing part of the world to be in, and you could be forgiven for imagining that time is running just a little slower than anywhere else. If you are looking to explore the region you will find that Launceston is in the perfect position for exploring all of the coastal towns as well as for venturing into Devon. Though the streets of Launceston may be medieval, visitors will find that the shops and boutiques are all thoroughly modern, aside from the occasional traditional Cornish tea room of course. One place you should definitely take the family to is New Mills Farm Park as it will provide everyone with some incredible memories. The castle green makes the perfect place for a picnic and offers some incredible views across the town and down into Newport. Trethorne Leisure Farm is a great destination whatever the weather, or you could join the hunt for the lost crystal in the Hidden Valley Discovery Park.
